Update: According to NYPD Commissioner Demot Shea, Malikah Shabazz suffered from a long-term illness before her passing.
Shea added that police learned from “other authorities, the medical examiner’s office and talking to the family” that Malikah “had been ill for a period of time, and at this point nothing appears suspicious.”
The medical examiner’s office also released the following statement:
We are investigating and the cause of death is pending the final results of additional testing, but the death does not appear to be suspicious following initial review.
We previously reported, the daughter of Malcolm X was found deceased in her Brooklyn home on Monday (November 23) by her daughter.
Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr., took to social media to express her condolences.
She tweeted:
I’m deeply saddened by the death of #MalikahShabazz. My heart goes out to her family, the descendants of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X.
Dr. Shabazz was pregnant with Malikah and her twin sister, Malaak, when Brother Malcolm was assassinated.
Be at peace, Malikah.

It’s with a heavy heart that I report Malikah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, was found dead in her Brooklyn, New York home on Monday (November 22).
According to police, Malikah was found by her daughter just before 5 p.m. EST. There are no signs of foul play.
Malikah Shabazz was one of Malcolm X’s six daughters.
She was 56.
The news of Malikah’s death comes on the heels of a Manhattan judge exonerating Muhammad Aziz and the late Khalil Islam, two men who were convicted of killing the civil rights activist more than 50 years ago.
This story is developing.
I extended my prayers and deepest condolences to her family during this difficult time.
