Luigi Mangione charged first-degree murder

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been officially indicted for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with charges upgraded to first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced the news Tuesday, describing the shocking killing as “intended to evoke terror.”

The slaying occurred on December 4 in Midtown Manhattan as Thompson was headed to an investor conference.

Prosecutors allege that Mangione, who was apprehended days later in Pennsylvania, executed a premeditated plan to target the CEO after months of fixation on the healthcare giant.

The Investigation & Charges

Luigi Mangione’s charges include:

  • Two counts of second-degree murder (one classified as an act of terrorism)
  • Multiple counts of criminal weapon possession
  • Possession of a forged instrument

Authorities revealed Mangione had a ghost gun with a 3D-printed receiver, homemade silencer, and live ammunition at the time of his arrest.

His writings allegedly detailed frustration with UnitedHealthcare, including a chilling passage: “What do you do? You whack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention.”

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch condemned any attempt to glorify Mangione’s actions, calling the killing “a senseless act of violence.”

Despite this, Mangione has gained controversial support online, with some viewing him as a folk hero and contributing to his defense fund.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney and his production company Jigsaw Productions are partnering with Anonymous Content to produce a documentary about the murder.

Known for gripping investigative storytelling, Gibney will explore the events leading up to the killing, Mangione’s background, and the societal backlash surrounding the case.
