Lizzo may have been getting dragged on Twitter, but she was victorious in court.
On Friday, a judge dismissed a lawsuit by three songwriters who claimed they should be credited on the singer’s hit single, “Truth Hurts.”
Justin Raisen, Jeremiah Raisen, and Justin “Yves” Rothman said a few months before “Truth Hurts” was composed, they wrote “Healthy” for Lizzo and she copied the song for her chart-topping hit.
The dispute is over the line:
I just did a DNA test / turns out I’m a 100% that b**ch.
The line is included in both songs.
Judge Dolly M. Gee held that under 9th Circuit precedent, the men cannot claim joint authorship for “Truth Hurts” because they have said it is a separate work derived from “Health.”
Oh, but it ain’t over!
The songwriters now intend to claim that “Truth Hurts” was the end result of a continuous creative process that began with “Healthy.”
The judge allowed the men to amend their lawsuit to pursue that theory.
