It’s with an extremely heavy heart that I report legendary soul singer Betty Wright has passed away.

She was 66.

The public was alerted that Betty wasn’t doing well after Chaka Khan took to social media and asked prayer warriors to uplift the singer in prayer.

When Ice Cream Convos shared her post, Chaka commented writing, “CANT IMAGINE THIS EARTH WITHOUT YOU BETTY..???????”

The family released the following statement:

On Sunday, May 10, 2020, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, godmother, mentor, friend and music icon, Betty Wright transitioned to be with the Lord.

On behalf of the immediate family, we would like to say thank you for all your support prayers and outpouring of love that you have shown our beloved.

We know that there are so many people that have been impacted by her life, love, and light: and may want to share in the remembering of her. Out of respect for the family, we would like to keep this solemn time of bereavement and loss private.

We thank you for understanding our request during this sensitive time and ask that you keep the family in your prayers.

Bessie Regina Norris, better known by her stage name Betty Wright, was an American soul and R&B singer, songwriter and background vocalist, who rose to fame in the 1970s with hits such as “Clean Up Woman” and “Tonight is the Night”.

She was also prominent in regard to the use of whistle register.

My sincerest condolences to Betty Wright’s family, friends, and all who loved her and was touched by her amazing talents.

Rest in paradise.
