In a tragic turn of events that has shaken the Collin County community, Karmelo Anthony, 18, has been indicted for the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

What Happened At Kuykendall Stadium?

In a tragic and violent incident that has deeply impacted the Frisco community, Karmelo Anthony, 18, has been indicted for the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The stabbing took place on April 2, 2025, during a high school track meet at Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Anthony, who was 17 at the time, is accused of fatally stabbing Metcalf during an altercation between the two. Following the grand jury’s decision on Tuesday, the case has now moved formally into the court system. District Attorney Greg Willis made an announcement, confirming the indictment and outlining the path the case will take moving forward.

A Statement From District Attorney Greg Willis

Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis addressed the indictment in a video statement, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

“Earlier this spring, our community was shaken by what happened at a school track meet in Frisco — the violent loss of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf,” Willis stated.

He went on to explain the efforts his team had taken to present evidence to the grand jury.

After weeks of work, the grand jury returned a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony.

This indictment means the case will now move forward in the court system.

“We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core,” said Willis, acknowledging the emotional toll the case has had on the local community.

Willis also expressed his continued commitment to pursuing justice through the legal process, stating, “The justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle. That’s what we’re committed to. And that’s exactly what this case deserves.”

He closed by urging the public to keep Austin’s family in their thoughts and prayers as the legal process continues.

“Remember that a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law,” Willis reminded viewers.

Karmelo Anthony’s Legal Defense

Anthony’s defense attorney, Mike Howard, has expressed confidence in the justice system.

He maintains that the defense will argue Anthony acted in self-defense during the altercation with Metcalf.

“We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Karmelo Anthony may have acted in self-defense,” Howard stated.

The legal proceedings now begin as Anthony faces a first-degree felony charge.

If convicted, Anthony could face a sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years in prison, or life.

Texas law treats 17-year-olds as adults in criminal cases, which means Anthony will be tried as an adult.

The Surveillance Footage

Frisco ISD’s release of surveillance footage in mid-June has brought new light to the incident.

The footage, captured from a camera near the press box, shows the moments leading up to the altercation.

The video reveals a sudden interaction between two individuals under a tent at around 9:55 a.m., followed by a flurry of movement as people scattered.

Minutes later, an ambulance arrived, and paramedics struggled to reach Metcalf, who was found slumped in the stands.

The investigation later revealed that the knife used in the stabbing was found behind the tent, marked by police with crime scene tape and a blue tarp.

Shortly after, Anthony was taken into custody.

According to reports, when the arresting officer stated, “I have the alleged suspect [in custody],” Anthony allegedly replied, “I’m not alleged, I did it.”

The Questions That Remain

As the legal process unfolds, many questions remain.

Was the stabbing an act of self-defense, as Anthony’s defense suggests?

The trial will be the place for these questions to be answered, and the community will be waiting for justice to be served.

For now, the focus remains on the loss of Austin Metcalf and the lasting impact this event has had on the Frisco community.

As the trial draws closer, all eyes will be on the legal proceedings to determine Karmelo Anthony’s fate.
