It’s with a truly heavy heart that I report Gregory Sierra has died.
The actor is best known for his role Miguel “Chano” Amanguale, a detective on ABC’s “Barney Miller,” and he became near and dear to my heart as Julio Fuentes on “Sanford and Son.“
Gregory died on January 4 after battling cancer, according to his widow Helene Tabor, who confirmed his passing to CNN.
He was quite wonderful, and my heart is broken into 400 million pieces. The cancer persisted for quite a while and he was doing the best he could and just couldn’t do it anymore.
Gregory was 83.
Originally from New York, Sierra relocated to California, pursuing a film and stage career that ultimately spanned five decades. His most prominent roles were in sitcoms from the 1970s.
My sincerest condolences to Gregory Sierra’s family and all who knew and loved him.
May he rest in paradise.
