Walter Scott, one of the founding members of the iconic R&B group The Whispers, has passed away at the age of 81 following a courageous six-month battle with cancer.

His family confirmed that he transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at his home in Northridge, Los Angeles.

With his twin brother Wallace “Scotty” Scott by his side, Walter helped form one of the most beloved vocal groups in soul music history—The Whispers.

Their timeless catalog includes hits like “And the Beat Goes On,” “Rock Steady,” “It’s a Love Thing,” and “Lady,” songs that continue to resonate with generations of music lovers.

🎶 The Whispers: From High School Harmonies To Platinum Hits

  • Origins: Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Walter and Scotty moved to Los Angeles in 1959 and began singing at Jordan High School.
  • Formation: In 1964, The Whispers were officially formed, marking the beginning of a legendary musical journey.
  • Military Service: Walter briefly paused his musical pursuits to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces as a signaleer during the Vietnam War.
  • Reunion & Rise: After returning in 1969, he rejoined the group and helped push The Whispers to new heights, recording for labels like Soul Train Records, Solar Records, and Capitol Records.
  • Breakthrough: By 1980, the group had found massive success. Walter once shared, “By 1981, we didn’t think of it as made it—we thought of it as the validation from our peers and fans that they liked us.”
  • Golden Era: From 1980 to 1988, everything The Whispers released went gold or platinum.
