Tyler Perry Steps Up To Feed Families In Crisis
Tyler Perry is once again proving that kindness is his superpower.
The filmmaker and philanthropist has donated nearly $1.4 million to organizations fighting food insecurity as millions of Americans face losing their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits during the ongoing government shutdown.
The 56-year-old Madea creator shared his heartfelt motivation with PEOPLE, explaining:
If you’ve never been poor then you may not fully understand the life changing impact SNAP benefits mean to hard-working people, to our seniors and to our children.
For millions of people, it could mean extreme hunger. For newborns, it could mean a lack of access to formula.
Perry’s donations will support organizations including Atlanta Community Food Bank, Baby2Baby, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Caring for Others, All for Lunch, Ron Clark Academy, and Goodr, which all provide essential resources to families in need.
Compassion In Action: Tyler Perry’s Lifelong Mission
This isn’t new territory for Tyler Perry.
He’s long used his platform and resources to uplift others, often inspired by his own journey from homelessness to Hollywood success.
A source close to the filmmaker told PEOPLE, “Tyler knows firsthand what it feels like to be hungry and homeless. Though he has achieved so much, those feelings never leave you. And when he sees injustices like this, he always feels compelled to help.”
Tyler called the loss of vital food assistance programs “heartbreaking,” adding, “Compassion is not political, it’s humanity and we seem to be missing both right now.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced that due to insufficient federal funding, over 42 million Americans could lose SNAP benefits in November.
For many families, that could mean the difference between dinner on the table or an empty plate.
Other Stars Join The Fight
Tyler Perry isn’t the only celebrity stepping up.
Jimmy Kimmel recently announced The Jimmy Kimmel Live! Big, Beautiful Food Bank, a donation center benefiting the L.A. Food Bank and the St. Joseph Center.
Meanwhile, Wanda Sykes used her platform at the Variety Power of Women event to shout out single mothers impacted by the shutdown.
While politicians debate and delays drag on, Tyler’s generosity is a powerful reminder of what true leadership looks like, helping people when they need it most.
