A Raw Look Inside The Fight Of Mark Kerr’s Life

The Smashing Machine hit theaters this weekend with a $6 million debut, and it’s easy to see why moviegoers are curious.
Written and directed by Benny Safdie, the film tells the unforgettable true story of Mark Kerr, one of the most dominant yet tormented figures in UFC history.
Set between 1997 and 2000, the movie dives deep into Mark’s turbulent career and personal demons.
It captures his rise in the octagon, his battles with addiction, and the chaos of his relationship with Dawn Staples.
It’s a gritty, emotional rollercoaster that doesn’t pull a single punch.
Dwayne Johnson’s Transformation Is Impressive But Not Quite A Knockout

Dwayne Johnson does an admirable job stepping into Mark Kerr’s shoes.
His physical transformation alone is jaw-dropping, and you can tell he took this role seriously.
This is the most vulnerable we’ve ever seen Dwayne, and he absolutely brings the pain, both physically and emotionally.
That said, while I understand the praise pouring in for his performance, I wasn’t completely blown away.
Dwayne Johnson “understood the assignment,” but I didn’t leave the theater feeling that Oscar buzz everyone’s talking about.
Emily Blunt Delivers A Soul-Piercing Performance

Now, let’s talk about Emily Blunt, because she ate this role up and left no crumbs.
Her portrayal of Dawn Staples is heartbreaking, nuanced, and painfully human.
You feel every ounce of Dawn’s love, frustration, and despair.
And whew, Frens, the relationship between Dawn and Mark is so toxic that even Iyanla Vanzant would’ve walked away mid-session.
It’s messy, it’s real, and it anchors the emotional weight of the entire film.
Ryan Bader Deserves His Flowers Too
Another standout is Ryan Bader, who plays Mark Coleman.
While this film centers on Kerr, I found myself equally invested in the friendship between the two Marks.
Bader brings an authenticity that grounds the movie in brotherhood and heart.
It’s a subplot that deserves way more recognition.
Final Thoughts: A Solid Film With Heavyweight Emotion
Overall, The Smashing Machine is a good film, gritty, emotional, and beautifully shot.
Benny Safdie delivers a raw look into the highs and lows of professional fighting, while the performances, especially Emily Blunt’s, elevate the story.
Dwayne Johnson fans will love seeing him stretch beyond the action hero mold, but if I’m keeping it real, Emily Blunt walks away with the championship belt on this one.
