‘The Roses’ Movie Review: Love, Laughter, And A Darkly Brilliant Battle

The official movies poster for 'The Roses' now in theaters.

I Went In Blind And Left Amazed

Frens, I walked into The Roses without watching a single trailer or peeking at a press release.

I just wanted the raw experience, no expectations.

Less than three minutes in, folks around me were already cracking up, and honestly, so was I.

The laughter rolled, the surprises kept coming, and I knew I was in for a ride.

A Perfect Marriage With Cracks Beneath The Surface

On the outside, Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) look like they have it all together: successful jobs, great kids, beautiful life.

You know, the Instagram-perfect couple everyone secretly side-eyes. But underneath that glossy image? Whew, things get messy.

Theo’s career starts sliding downhill while Ivy’s star begins to rise, and suddenly their marriage feels less like love and more like a heavyweight title match.

A Reimagining Of A Classic

The Roses is a clever reimagining of the 1989 dark comedy The War of the Roses, adapted from Warren Adler’s novel.

Director Jay Roach and screenwriter Tony McNamara put their stamp on it, giving us something fresh but still familiar.

It is sharp, it is witty, and surprisingly, it is pretty heartfelt.

Basically, they kept the chaos we loved but updated it for today’s audience.

Dark Comedy At Its Finest

The back-and-forth between Ivy and Theo? Pure gold.

Sharp jabs, shady one-liners, and laugh-out-loud pettiness that reminded me of a “Real Housewives of Atlanta” reunion, only with fancier accents and a bit more bite.

But do not get it twisted: behind all the shade is a heartbreakingly real story about a marriage unraveling, and that is what makes it hit different.

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch star in dark comedy 'The Roses,' a reimagining of 'The War of the Roses.'

Acting That Deserves A Standing Ovation

The cast? Stellar across the board.

Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Zoë Chao, Kate McKinnon, they all bring the heat.

But let’s be real, Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch own this movie.

Their chemistry is so good it feels like they have been married for decades.

Every fight, every glare, every tender moment, it is lived-in, layered, and magnetic.

Why You Should See It

The Roses is hilarious, heartbreaking, and a little too real at times.

It is the kind of film that makes you laugh until your stomach hurts, then suddenly hits you with the truth about how love can slip through the cracks when pride and silence take the wheel.

Married, single, divorced, situationship, it does not matter. You will feel this one.

So do yourself a favor: grab some popcorn, settle in, and prepare to laugh, cringe, and maybe shed a tear.

Oh, and keep a tissue handy. Trust me, you will thank me later.

Verdict: The Roses is one of the most entertaining dark comedies I have seen in years. Highly recommend.
