The Atlanta Greek Picnic is going down this weekend in the A, and founder Tiwa Works proudly talked about the tradition.
The Atlanta Greek Picnic is an annual summertime event that shares the values of the Divine 9 sororities and fraternities founded at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities).
The following fraternities and sororities make up the Divine 9:
- Alpha Kappa Alpha
- Kappa Alpha Psi
- Omega Psi Phi
- Delta Sigma Theta
- Zeta Phi Beta
- Alpha Phi Alpha
- Phi Beta Sigma
- Sigma Gamma Rho
- Iota Phi Theta
The principles of the Divine 9 are built on brotherhood, sisterhood, and service.
Tiwa Works, the founder of the Atlanta Greek Picnic, said he had no idea that the event would be around for 19 years but determination, consistency, and persistence allowed them to still be here.
He said they are happy to be a part of Atlanta’s culture and tradition.
Tiwa said a lot of people come from different countries to attend the event:
We get a lot of people that come from different countries, back home to Atlanta for the weekend, just to, you know, for Friday night’s, just to patronize the event in the city.
And it’s such a great thing to just see people pulling in from all over the world to enjoy the festivities that we’ve built.
Tiwa Works also spoke on some of the services that the Divine 9 are providing to the community during the week leading up to the picnic.
So, one thing we’ve prided ourselves on is really focusing on initiatives in the city.
That way we can make an impact.
For instance, we have three community service projects, simultaneously, at the same time, and we challenged ourselves just not to come to Atlanta for the weekend to have a good time, but also to commit to service projects.
We have one with Restoring One’s Hope at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
We have a cleaning on the Beltline, and other initiatives that were in the city.
We’re also focusing on mental health initiatives because we just want to also contribute to positive impact about mental health as well as just encouraging people to take opportunities to talk to our therapist, and just, you know, kill the stigma of mental health as well.
So we’re very proud of that and supporting local nonprofits in their space as well.
