A Full Circle Moment For Terrance Robinson Jr.
When Cirque du Soleil LUZIA lands in Atlanta this November, one of its most electrifying performers, Terrence Robinson Jr., will experience a milestone he’s waited more than 15 years for: performing in front of his family.
Although Terrence now calls Atlanta home, he was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.
And while he’s performed around the world, this stop means everything to him.
“This is actually the first time that a show I’ve been on will be in the same city as my family,” he told me.
“I’ve got family in McDonough and cousins planning to drive down from St. Louis. It’s going to be really special because it’s been over 15 years since most of them have seen me perform besides my mom.”
How Terrance Robinson Jr. Went From Backyard Mattresses To The Big Top
Terrence’s story sounds like something straight out of a movie.
A natural athlete from the start, he spent his childhood flipping off mattresses, playing football, baseball, basketball, and even boxing.
But no matter the sport, he couldn’t resist sneaking in a few flips. Acrobatics were second nature.
“Yes, I was one of those kids flipping on the mattresses,” he laughed.
“The moment I saw someone do a backflip, I wanted to do it too.”
His big break came by chance. After an injury sidelined him from sports in high school, a woman who owned a youth circus spotted him practicing flips in the street.
She handed her card to a security guard and invited him to learn more about circus arts.
At first, Terrence wasn’t sure since he wasn’t trying to be a clown, but curiosity won out.
“Once I went, I fell in love with it,” he said.
“They taught me how to juggle, balance, and refine my acrobatics. From there, everything changed.”
That passion eventually took him to École de Cirque de Québec, one of Canada’s top circus schools, where he refined his craft, immersed himself in a new culture, and even learned to speak French.
Finding His Wings With Cirque du Soleil
Over time, Terrence built an impressive resume performing in independent productions and Cirque du Soleil special events.
Although he once preferred smaller, more intimate shows, his perspective evolved as he gained experience.
When LUZIA began searching for a new cast member, two of his friends already in the show recommended him.
“Casting reached out, reviewed my videos, and welcomed me to the production,” he recalled.
In LUZIA, Terrence performs as a hummingbird, a role he describes as representing the soul of a warrior shaman.
The hoops he flies through symbolize life’s challenges and the strength it takes to overcome them.
“The performances themselves keep me motivated,” he said.
“Knowing I can make someone forget their problems, even for a moment, is everything.”
The Thrill Of Performing In LUZIA
One of Terrance’s favorite acts is called “Ecar,” a high-flying sequence involving two moving treadmills and hoops suspended in the air.
“I’m on one treadmill and my partner’s on the other,” he explained.
“He runs, flips through a hoop toward me, and I catch him on my feet. It’s wild, but so much fun.”
And yes, even the pros have bloopers.
“Half the time we make it through the rings, half the time we don’t,” Terrance joked.
“But it’s all love and laughter. We’re like a family out there.”
Despite the physical demands of up to ten performances a week, he thrives onstage.
“I’ve been doing circus for over 20 years,” he shared.
“Seeing people smile and forget their troubles for a while, it’s the best feeling in the world. All the training, dance, and acting classes pay off when you see that joy in the audience.”
Family, Faith, And The Heart Of Terrance Robinson Jr.
When I asked who he’s most excited to see in the audience when LUZIA hits Atlanta, his answer was tender.
“My grandmother,” he said softly. “She’s 98 and has only seen me perform once when I was 14. I can’t wait for her to see me now, doing what I love on a big stage.”
Family is everything to Terrance.
He comes from a large family with over 100 cousins.
“People are always surprised when they hear that,” he laughed. “But family is what keeps me grounded.”
Fluent in both English and French, he’s now living his dream, traveling the world, staying active, and sharing his gift with audiences everywhere.
Why You Need To See LUZIA
If you’ve never seen Cirque du Soleil LUZIA, Terrance says this is the show to experience.
“It’s a water show, a light show, and a high acrobatics show all in one,” he said.
“The costumes, makeup, story, everything is top-notch. It’ll make you laugh, cry, and feel inspired. There’s really no reason not to see it.”
I couldn’t agree more.
I’ve seen a few Cirque du Soleil productions, and LUZIA is a mesmerizing blend of beauty, strength, and imagination that’s truly hard to describe.
You just have to experience it for yourself.
