Today marks 35 years since Spike Lee graced us with his fourth cinematic joint, Mo’ Better Blues.
Released in 1990, the jazz-infused drama blended music, romance, and friendship with Lee’s signature storytelling style — and it’s still as captivating as ever.
The Story Behind The Blues
At the heart of the film is Giant (played by Spike Lee himself), a charming yet financially reckless manager who’s been guiding a talented jazz band.
But trouble starts brewing when Shadow (Wesley Snipes), the group’s gifted saxophonist, decides Giant isn’t cut out for the business side of things.
Shadow wants someone who can actually keep the band’s finances in order.
That move doesn’t sit well with Bleek Gilliam (Denzel Washington), the band’s smooth and talented trumpeter — and Giant’s lifelong friend.
What starts as a business disagreement soon spirals into a personal power struggle, threatening the harmony of the band both on and off stage.
Romance, Rivalry, And Real-Life Choices
While Bleek is trying to keep the band together, he’s also tangled in a complicated love triangle.
On one side, there’s Indigo (Joie Lee), the sweet, grounded schoolteacher who knows his heart.
On the other, there’s Clarke (Cynda Williams), the sultry and ambitious singer with her own dreams.
Choosing between the two forces Bleek to confront not just his romantic life, but who he truly wants to be as a man.
A Jazz-Driven Spike Lee Joint
Mo’ Better Blues isn’t just a film about music — it’s a film about loyalty, ambition, and the sacrifices we make for both love and art.
With standout performances from Washington, Snipes, Joie Lee, and Cynda Williams, plus a score that makes you want to sway in your seat, the movie remains a fan favorite among Lee’s impressive filmography.
Denzel & Spike, Back Together Again
If you’re feeling nostalgic after revisiting Mo’ Better Blues, you won’t have to wait long to see Denzel Washington back in Spike Lee mode.

The pair reunites for Highest 2 Lowest, hitting theaters August 15.
Judging by their track record, it’s safe to say this summer release is already on every movie lover’s radar.
