As the Season 1 finale of #Somebody’s Son on OWN quickly approaches, I had the pleasure of sitting down once again with James Hatchett and his fierce, faith-filled mother, Charlease Hatchett, to talk about their rollercoaster experience on OWN’s hit Black dating reality show.

And let me tell you—when it comes to family, faith, and finding love, this duo came through with honesty, heart, and just the right amount of heat.

#Somebody’s Son

OWN’s latest love and relationship series, #Somebody’s Son, is bringing the hashtag to life—and it’s everything

Derived from the viral online celebration of Black love, #Somebody’s Son is a one-of-a-kind dating journey rooted in romance, family, and finding “the one.”

The series follows three charming, single, and successful Black men—including James Hatchett, a 30-year-old cyber security engineer—as they embark on a high-stakes search for real, lasting love.

But there’s a twist: their mothers are along for the ride.

Yes, you read that right.

These moms aren’t just there for the vibes—they’re living in the house, watching everything, and playing a hands-on role in helping their sons navigate love.

Through bonding moments, challenges, and maybe a little chaos, the question becomes: Does mama really know best?

Preparing For The Finale: Relief, Reflection, And Rewatching

James shared that he’s feeling relieved going into the #Somebody’s Son Season 1 finale—after living through the emotional whirlwind, staying quiet while episodes aired, and now finally being able to speak freely.

Meanwhile, Charlease was candid about how surreal it is to watch the edited version of events after living through them.

“We lived it. But when it airs, we’re seeing it just like everyone else,” she said. “But the difference is—we remember the full moments, even when they’re cut short on screen.”

On Bre’Von’s Exit: No Spark, But Plenty Of Respect

One of the biggest turning points in James’ #Somebody’s Son journey was Bre’Von’s emotional exit.

She was the first woman to enter the house, and her energy was a breath of fresh air.

But as James put it, while the conversation flowed easily, “the spark just wasn’t there.”

Charlease admitted she had a soft spot for Bre’Von early on, advocating for her and even getting a little emotional when she left.

“She brought energy into the room,” Charlease said warmly. “It’s different when someone brings energy in, instead of draining it out.”

James & Sabranae: A Checklist Connection With Real Chemistry

As viewers of #Somebody’s Son on OWN, it’s clear that Sabranae checks all the boxes—poised, intentional, and aligned with James in values.

And let’s be honest, their butterfly exhibit date was giving rom-com perfection.

From body language to that “Do I give you butterflies?” line (James, you ate that!), their chemistry was unmistakable.

But as we know, checking boxes isn’t everything…

Alyssia Vs. Charlease: A Clash Of Values Or Missed Communication?

Alyssia may have had James’ attention from the moment she walked in the door, but her connection with Charlease?

Whew. That’s another story.

Throughout the season, we saw the tension between Alyssia and Charlease rise—from “for the streets” comments to that unforgettable “rescue” moment.

One of the biggest flashpoints came when Alyssia read a heartfelt letter expressing how hurt she felt by some of Charlease’s comments.

Viewers were torn. Some saw it as a teachable moment. Others saw it as another red flag.

But in our #Somebody’s Son interview, Charlease set the record straight.

“I wasn’t trying to hurt her. I was trying to see if she fit into our village.”

She admitted she may have misjudged Alyssia early on, but emphasized that her concern came from a place of love and protection.

“I’m his fiercest protector, his lifelong guide,” she said. “And if I said something that hurt her, I apologized for that.”

James, ever the gentleman, handled it all with grace—respecting his mom, hearing out the women, and managing the weight of the entire house dynamic.

James Hatchett: The Gentleman Reality TV Needed

Let’s take a moment to celebrate what James brought to this dating series: class, clarity, and kindness.

Whether it was asking for consent before a kiss or staying cool under pressure, James reminded us what it looks like when a man leads with integrity.

“You don’t have to be a dog to get attention from women,” he said. “You just have to be yourself.”

And that—along with his big smile and quick wit—might just be why so many viewers are rooting for him to find his person on #Somebody’s Son on OWN.

A Family Affair With Real-World Lessons

Whether James walks away from #Somebody’s Son with a new love or simply a deeper understanding of what he’s looking for, one thing is certain: his relationship with his mom is something special.

From tough conversations to emotional breakthroughs, their dynamic was one of the most authentic parts of the OWN reality show.

As we head into the #Somebody’s Son finale on Saturday (June 28) at 9 PM EST on the Oprah Winfrey Network, the big question still stands: Will James choose Alyssia, whose chemistry has kept fans buzzing? Or will Sabranae’s strong foundation win out?

We’ll be watching right along with you—and don’t be surprised if I call up James and Charlease for a post-finale recap.
