Born and raised in communities that stood by him during his darkest moments, Raymond’s journey from wrongful conviction to becoming a champion for reform is nothing short of inspirational.

Raymond Santana: A Journey Marked By Resilience

Raymond, a proud member of the Exonerated 5, was only 14 when he was coerced into a false confession during the infamous 1989 Central Park jogger case.

Wrongfully convicted alongside four other teens, he served over seven years behind bars before his conviction was overturned in 2002—thanks to the true perpetrator’s confession and DNA evidence confirming his innocence.

Since his release, Raymond has dedicated his life to criminal and social justice advocacy.

In the New York State Capitol, he has supported legislation aimed at:

  • Creating legal pathways to exoneration
  • Protecting young people by ensuring they consult an attorney before waiving their Miranda rights
  • Banning deceptive and coercive police interrogation tactics

A Campaign Built On Community And Change

Running for New York City Council, Raymond is fueled by gratitude for the communities of East Harlem and the Bronx—the very neighborhoods that raised him.

Amid an era when public opinion was swayed by influential figures like Donald Trump, his community never wavered in its support.

His campaign focuses on:

  • Advancing criminal justice reform
  • Expanding educational opportunities
  • Increasing affordable housing
  • Creating economic pathways for underserved communities

Raymond firmly believes that bridging the gap between police and community is essential for public safety and equity.

With his personal experiences and unwavering commitment, he is ready to represent his home with integrity and resilience.

Honoring A Legacy Of Advocacy

Raymond Santana isn’t the only member of the Exonerated 5 stepping into the political arena.

Dr. Yusef Salaam, recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from former President Barack Obama, has served on the New York City Council representing the 9th District since 2024.

Their journeys underscore a powerful legacy of using personal adversity as a catalyst for meaningful change.

Raymond Santana ‘Pushing Hope’ Memoir Release

This moving young adult memoir recounts his harrowing experience—from his early days in Harlem, through the trial and imprisonment, to his triumphant fight for justice.
