R. Kelly’s legal team says the singer overdosed in prison and is now the target of an alleged murder plot. Federal officials have denied release.

R. Kelly Reportedly Suffers Overdose In Prison Amid Claims Of Unsafe Conditions

R. Kelly’s legal team claims the singer recently overdosed in prison after receiving what they describe as a dangerously high dose of medication while in solitary confinement at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina.

According to court documents obtained by AllHipHop, the 57-year-old singer fainted on June 12 and was hospitalized after experiencing dizziness and vision loss.

He was treated at Duke University Hospital and observed for two days.

R. Kelly’s attorney, Beau B. Brindley, stated:

“They gave him an amount of medicine that could have killed him… within two days of filing his motion, they administered an unsafe dose that put his life in jeopardy.”

As of now, there has been no independent confirmation from the Bureau of Prisons regarding the overdose or treatment details.

In addition to the overdose allegations, Kelly’s lawyers say he is in danger of being murdered by other inmates.

They claim a terminally ill inmate, Mikeal Glenn Stine, was offered leniency in exchange for carrying out a hit on Kelly—an allegation detailed in court filings.

Stine reportedly chose to warn Kelly instead, but according to the legal filing, both now fear retaliation from other inmates allegedly affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood.

“The threat to Mr. Kelly’s life continues each day that no action is taken,” the motion states. “One of them will surely do what Mr. Stine has not.”

These claims have not been independently verified, and prison officials have not responded publicly.

Conditions In Solitary Confinement Described As ‘Inhumane’

Kelly’s team alleges the singer is being held in solitary confinement under poor conditions.

They say he is sleeping in a cell infested with spiders, denied access to food from commissary, and unable to contact his family.

“He is alone in the dark in miserable conditions,” Brindley said. “He’s too fearful to eat prison meals due to the threat of being poisoned.”

Emergency Release Denied By Federal Prosecutors

Kelly’s legal team has now filed multiple motions requesting temporary release or home detention.

One motion was even directed to former President Donald Trump.

Federal prosecutors rejected the most recent request, describing the claims of a murder-for-hire plot as “repugnant” and “deeply unserious,” according to ABC News Chicago.

R. Kelly’s Conviction And Sentence

R. Kelly, born Robert Sylvester Kelly, is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence after being convicted on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

He was sentenced in 2022 following a high-profile federal trial in New York.

What Happens Next?

Kelly’s legal team continues to pursue avenues for temporary release, arguing that his safety is at risk while in custody.

As of now, the Bureau of Prisons has not issued an official statement regarding the overdose claim or the alleged threats to his life.
