Pastor Jamal Bryant delivers open letter to Cardi B urging her to support the Target boycott

Pastor Jamal Bryant, who’s been leading the charge in the Target boycott after the company moonwalked on its DEI promises, penned an open letter to Cardi B after she posted a selfie in the store.

The lengthy letter, which he wrote with a “chest full of love,” addressed why he’s urging the Black community to boycott the popular retailer and encouraged Cardi—without bashing her—to stand in solidarity.

Read his full message below:

Dear @iamcardib, Grace and Peace to you! I come to you with a chest full of love.

Over the past couple of months, there has been a national boycott against @target because they have betrayed our community by dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion.

African Americans have spent 12 million dollars a day, and yet they don’t see us as a viable partner.

We’ve asked them to invest in Black banks, Black colleges, and Black communities, and under pressure from the administration, they haven’t felt compelled to even respond.

Our unified movement of churches and grassroots organizations has led to a drop in their stock, a reduction of foot traffic, a reduction in their valuation, and a slashing of the CEO’s salary.

Lastly, we collectively have canceled Target because we don’t think patronizing them is best for our community.

When I saw you post a picture of you and your beautiful family in the store, I felt certain that with your demanding schedule, you were probably unaware.

Having 163 million following you is a great deal of influence, and many follow your lead. I hope you will visit targetfast.org and walk alongside us.

I’m fully aware that you identify as Latino and that you have children who represent both communities, and to that end, you should know the movement has support and buy-in from the Latino community—and more specifically, workers.

Your presence could be part of the most effective boycott in 70 years since the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

In the words of Martin Luther King, “A person who doesn’t stand for something will fall for anything.”

Commenters were quick to support Pastor Jamal Bryant’s heartfelt approach, and many believe Cardi will ultimately join the fight.

Here’s what folks had to say:

@kianadancie: @iamcardib we need you to stand on business WITH us sis!!!

@makeupmadnessbycherry: He’s not bashing her… He’s simply asking her to join in… Can y’all read and comprehend???

@suittmademe: I love this approach. I think you missed the spirit of his message. He came with love, not judgment—and offered insight, not indictment. It wasn’t an attack, it was an invitation. We can acknowledge Cardi’s impact and still hold space for strategic awareness around where our dollars go. That’s how we move forward—with both truth and respect.

@gscott_show: Y’all gonna be shocked when Cardi agrees and carries the boycott further. ✊🏾

As of now, Cardi B hasn’t officially responded to Pastor Bryant.

But not long after he shared the letter, she posted this photo to her Instagram Story…

Frens, are you down with the Target boycott?

This one was easy peasy for me because I barely went to the store in the first place.

P.S. Remind me to tell y’all about the time I passed out in their store nearly 17 years ago! 😩

  1. Hopefully people still don’t just go places because a celebrity did it. I don’t go to target regularly but hopefully Cardi took the message to heart and will support.
