The Sudden End Of “Dexter: Original Sin”

Well Frens, it looks like “Dexter: Original Sin” has officially been laid to rest after just one season.

Paramount+ has pulled the plug on Season 2, despite previously announcing a renewal back in April.

According to Variety, the prequel series had been on hiatus all along, with no production dates ever scheduled.

The show originally premiered in December 2024 and wrapped in February 2025, but now that is all she wrote.

Paramount Shifts Focus To “Dexter: Resurrection”

While “Original Sin” will not be moving forward, Paramount+ is putting its energy behind “Dexter: Resurrection”, the sequel series that brings Michael C. Hall back as everyone’s favorite blood-spatter expert turned vigilante killer.

The first season of “Resurrection” premiered July 11 and has been pulling in impressive numbers.

The debut episode reached 4.4 million multiplatform viewers in its first week, and the series holds a glowing 94% critics’ approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A writer’s room for a possible Season 2 is already in the works, although nothing is guaranteed just yet.

Showtime’s Declining Scripted Slate

The decision to scrap “Original Sin” comes amid big changes at Showtime following its merger with Skydance and rebrand as Paramount+ with Showtime.

With Matt Thunell now overseeing production, the focus appears to be on consolidating the brand’s scripted offerings.

Right now, Showtime’s lineup is slim, featuring titles like The ChiThe AgencyYellowjackets, and of course Dexter: Resurrection.

Looking Back At “Dexter: Original Sin”

Set in 1991, “Dexter: Original Sin” explored the early days of Dexter Morgan.

Patrick Gibson played young Dexter, with Michael C. Hall lending his signature voice as the character’s inner monologue.

The cast was stacked with Molly Brown, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey joining Gibson.

The series had Clyde Phillips back as showrunner, with Hall also serving as executive producer.

Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios produced, with Paramount Global handling distribution.

As much as I hate this for the cast and crew, I cannot say I am shocked.

To be real, “Original Sin” struggled to hold my attention.

But with “Resurrection” bringing him back front and center, the franchise may still have plenty of life left.
