In the world of social media, your digital footprint can haunt you forever. That reality has caught up with Karla Sofia Gascón, the Oscar-nominated star of Emilia Pérez, as her past tweets have resurfaced and sparked controversy.
Gascón has recently issued a public apology following backlash over her previous social media posts that contained disparaging remarks about Muslims, George Floyd, and even the Oscars themselves.
Karla Sofia Gascón’s Deeply Troubling Digital Footprint
It all began when Gascón’s old Twitter account came under scrutiny.
The posts uncovered were shocking, inflammatory, and outright offensive.
Among the most notable was a tweet that mocked the growing presence of Muslims in Spain, with the actress expressing discomfort over women in hijabs and implying that the country would eventually need to teach Arabic instead of English.
“I’m sorry, is it just my impression or are there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.”
Another tweet involved a photo of a Muslim family, with Gascón making disparaging comments about Islam and the treatment of women within the religion, including an offensive caption that belittled the practice of wearing a burka.
“Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”
Her rhetoric went further, attacking religions in general with harsh language, as seen in another tweet where she lashed out at Islam, Christianity, and Catholicism, labeling their followers “morons” for allegedly violating human rights.
“I am so sick of so much of this s**t, of Islam, of Christianity, of Catholicism and of all the f**king beliefs of morons that violate human rights.”
Her comments didn’t stop there. In the wake of George Floyd’s tragic death in 2020, Gascón posted a deeply problematic statement questioning the public’s outrage over the event.
Her tweet labeled Floyd as a “drug addict swindler” and dismissed the global movement that followed his death, a sentiment that has understandably drawn widespread criticism.
“I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins. They’re all wrong.”
But it wasn’t just these statements that made headlines. Gascón also took aim at the Oscars, a ceremony that had become increasingly diverse.
In 2021, she posted a crude commentary about the ceremony, calling it an “Afro-Korean festival” and criticizing the focus on diversity and protest films.
Her remarks about the Oscars suggested that she was uncomfortable with the growing emphasis on inclusion and social justice.
“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films,” she posted. “I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”
The Apology
As expected, Gascón’s past posts stirred a great deal of anger and disappointment, particularly considering her public position as a rising star in the entertainment industry.
In response to the growing backlash, Gascón issued a formal apology, acknowledging the hurt her words had caused.
She stated, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”
While her apology was intended to heal the wounds created by her words, the damage has already been done.
Many have expressed skepticism about whether such statements can truly be reconciled with her current position in the industry.
Gascón, a transgender Mexican citizen of Spanish origin, had been receiving recognition for her work in Emilia Pérez, which led many fans to feel betrayed by her past remarks.
Girl…keep that apology! And to think I was actually happy for Karla when she began receiving awards and recognition for her work.
I gotta start running Twitter background checks on folks…
