When I tell you “Operation: Aunties” is a whole vibe? Believe it.
This action-packed, cyber-crime dramedy is not just a movie—it’s a movement, and I had the absolute pleasure of chatting with the powerhouse trio behind it: director Wendy Raquel Robinson and stars Tisha Campbell and Amiyah Scott.

Set to premiere Friday, July 11 on ALLBLK, “Operation: Aunties” follows Dr. Carol Cleavers (Melissa De Sousa), a blockchain expert who uncovers a dark web trafficking ring and recruits her retired detective bestie Sharon (Tisha Campbell) and tech-genius niece Aminah (Amiyah Scott) to take down the operation themselves.
Yes, it’s as bold and brilliant as it sounds—and it’s based on a true story.
💥 It Was A Love Fest On Set
Before I could even dive into questions, I had to let them know how much I loved the film.
Their energy? Immaculate.
When I asked if filming was as fun as watching it, the answer came quickly: “We sure did!”
It was a full-on love fest on set, and you can feel that chemistry throughout the movie.
Wendy Raquel Robinson opened up about stepping behind the camera to direct, admitting that the original script was tech-heavy and intimidating.
But she knew there was a story that needed to be told—and she was determined to make it resonate with us.
“It had gone through at least four different drafts,” Wendy shared.
“We needed to make it relatable without isolating anyone. Once I learned it was based on a true story, I knew I had to do it.”
👩🏾💻 Representation That Hits Different
The film subtly but powerfully explores the risks of digital life—from ride-share dangers to trafficking via the dark web.
But it also highlights something we don’t see enough of: Black women thriving in tech.
When I asked Amiyah Scott about representing Black women in tech, her passion lit up the conversation.
“There are Black women in tech, but it’s not shown on screen,” Amiyah said.
“This was a chance to show our full range and make space.”
And make space she did.
Her portrayal of Aminah is sharp, grounded, and empowering.
The film seamlessly weaves in these messages without ever feeling preachy—just real, necessary, and unforgettable.
👑 Entering Our Auntie Era With Style
Let’s talk about the auntie era.
I confessed that I feel like I’m entering mine, and the conversation quickly turned into a masterclass on what it truly means to be an “auntie.”
“Being an auntie isn’t negative,” Tisha said.
“It’s about being a soft place to land. Someone relatable. Someone younger folks want to come to.”
And if there’s one auntie who steals the show, it’s Sharon.
I told Tisha straight up—her character is the glue.
She’s the pistol, the punchline, and the perfect balance between Dr. Carol’s strategy and Aminah’s logic.
“I try to learn who I’m playing opposite—body movements, rhythm, everything—because I see myself as support,” Tisha shared.
“It takes a whole village to tell a story.”
Also… there’s one line in the movie I can’t spoil, but when you hear it?
Just know it was an ad-lib from Tisha that had the whole room hollering.
She really is the queen of funny.
