Nick Cannon Reflects On Why He Had 12 Children

Nick Cannon is telling it like it is. During a candid conversation on “The Breakfast Club,” the actor, comedian, and proud father of 12 admitted that his decision to have so many children was a response to unresolved trauma.

When Charlamagne Tha God asked if building such a big family was tied to his pain, Nick was quick to agree.

“Yeah. Now, I’m learning that now,” he said.

He explained that it wasn’t about intentionally trying to father 12 kids, but more about living without careful thought.

With money, access, and freedom, he found himself going with the flow instead of doing the mature thing.

“Yo, I’m gonna just live life and have fun and whatever happens, happens, I can handle it,” Cannon shared.

Looking back now as he approaches 45, Nick admits he wishes he had slowed down and focused on healing first.

Nick Cannon On Monogamy And Healing

The conversation also touched on monogamy, a topic Cannon has always been open about.

When asked if his views had changed, he made it clear they had not.

“Nah, not really. Not for me.”

He explained that his upbringing shaped his understanding of love and relationships in untraditional ways.

While he does not regret his children, he acknowledges that avoiding the work of healing after divorce left behind a trail of unaddressed trauma.

Nick is learning that facing the origin of his pain is key, rather than distracting himself with new relationships.

“Now you’re leaving trauma every step of the way instead of fixing it from its origin,” he admitted.

Nick Cannon Opens Up About Mental Health

Nick Cannon has also been transparent about his mental health journey.

In November, while volunteering at the Los Angeles Mission’s Thanksgiving celebration, he revealed he was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).

“I still don’t understand it all the way, but I kind of always wanted to get tested for it,” he shared.

He added that he has lived with ADHD and dyslexia since childhood and always knew he was neurodivergent.

On his “Counsel Culture” podcast, Cannon explained that therapy has been a powerful tool.

“I’ve taken all the power away from the term narcissism because I’ve researched it and I understand it,” he said.

“To be able to say, ‘I’m healing. I need help. Show me,’ is powerful.”
