Frens, this is NOT a drill! Netflix has finally dropped the official teaser trailer for The Rip, and it’s already looking like one of 2025’s biggest must-see thrillers.

What Is ‘The Rip’ About?
Directed and written by Joe Carnahan (Narc, Copshop), The Rip puts a fresh spin on the classic cop drama.
Carnahan calls it “an extension of the genre” with a real emotional core and one big question running through it all: Are we the good guys?

At the center of the story are two Miami cops, Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck).
After stumbling upon millions of dollars in a derelict stash house, their loyalty, trust, and brotherhood are put to the ultimate test.
With outside forces circling and the temptation of dirty money looming, the line between right and wrong blurs fast.

The Inspiration Behind The Film
Carnahan drew inspiration from real stories told by a close friend, a Miami police officer who taught him about “rips” the term cops use when they seize illegal weapons, drugs, or, in this case, millions in cash.
He also tapped into cinematic classics like Serpico, Prince of the City, and Michael Mann’s Heat.
The DNA of those films, mixed with Carnahan’s gritty storytelling, promises a ride that’s both thrilling and thought-provoking.

Damon And Affleck’s Brotherhood On Screen
Let’s be real, seeing Damon and Affleck share the screen again is enough to get movie fans hyped.
Carnahan praised their natural chemistry, saying their decades-long friendship brings a genuine intimacy to Dumars and Byrne’s bond.
“They’ve been world-famous for over 30 years with a wonderful sense of friendship and brotherhood,” Carnahan told Tudum. “As anchors, everyone else in the cast drafts off them.”
And what a cast it is: Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Kyle Chandler, Scott Adkins, and Sasha Calle round out a powerhouse lineup.
Carnahan says the camaraderie on set translated into performances full of authenticity and heart.

Why This Story Hits Different
Yes, The Rip is an action thriller packed with Miami heat, gunfire, and tension.
But at its core, Carnahan hopes audiences walk away reminded that there are still good people in the world.
Compassion, kindness, and empathy shine through even in the darkest corners of the story.
And just a warning, Carnahan adds: “If the audience falls in love with the characters, you got them. Because at some point you’re going to get your heart broken, you just don’t know by whom.”

Release Date And Trailer
The Rip hits Netflix on January 16, 2025.
Until then, the teaser trailer is here to give you a taste of the drama, the brotherhood, and the millions that could make or break it all.
