‘Speak No Evil’ Review
All the people-pleasers be quuuiiieeettt! Oh, don’t be silent, you’ve been acquiescing all this time, why stop now?
Really, though, why do we appease some folks when knowing good and well we don’t want to? Is it so we won’t be perceived as difficult? Is it a need for acceptance?
Hey, I understand trying new things to get out of a comfort zone but saying yes or no to requests and suggestions that may compromise your health or morals – ion know ‘bout that.
Standing on business takes confidence, and in the new movie “Speak No Evil”, a family’s lack of backbone may not only cost them the ability to walk upright, but their meek lives as well.
Does this film speak volumes, or should we give it the silent treatment? Let’s go!
You gotta big mouth! A big mouth, a big mouth! “Speak No Evil” stars James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, Aisling Franciosi, Dan Hough, and Alex West Lefler.
While vacationing in Italy, the Dalton family encounter Paddy and Ciara, a free-spirited couple with somewhat aggressive personalities.
They invite the Daltons to their secluded farmhouse for a little visit and although they have reservations, the Daltons give in to the request.
What happens after that is a series of bad decisions! How bad?
Well, you know in those scary movies when a character decides to walk straight toward the screaming or when Fred from “Scooby Doo” always told the gang they should split up? Yeah, that bad.
“Speak No Evil” is a thrilling psychological horror flick but it manages to do what few other movies in its genre have done; frustrate the hell out of you – in a good way.
The acting is superb.
Davis and McNairy as the Daltons have an extremely well-written backstory.
Their relationship issues are portrayed onscreen with greatest of skills.
Ben Dalton (Davis) is going to work your nerves! His wife Louise will, too, but I do believe you’ll see she at least has an inkling of a redeeming quality.
Listen, the whole family will make you want to shake them and shout, “WHAT ARE YOU ALL DOING?!?!”
McAvoy’s performance is epic but that goes without saying.
His ability to go from calm to enraged and back to calm is just marvelous.
This cast gives it their all and should be applauded.
The plot is something special, but the moral of the story commands attention.
There are consequences when you go against your better judgment and say yes or no just to please someone.
One interesting point about this film is that there is no score until the 3rd act.
That natural sound makes it seem longer that what the film actually is at times.
Nonetheless, “Speak No Evil” elevates your blood pressure with superior performances and an intense final act.
I’m co-signing it to the fullest!
Y’all better stop trying to please everybody.
Take these words home and think ‘em through, or the next review I write might be about you…
