Montell Jordan Opens Up About His Cancer Battle

Montell Jordan, the voice behind the timeless hit “This Is How We Do It,” has opened up about his battle with prostate cancer, revealing that the disease has returned.

The 56-year-old singer, songwriter, and pastor shared the emotional news on the 3rd Hour of “TODAY.”

Despite undergoing surgery to remove his prostate, follow-up screenings showed that cancer still remained in his body.

“I always imagined I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side,” Montell said. “But close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s been detected that there is still cancer.”

Early Diagnosis Changed Everything

Montell was first diagnosed in early 2024 after a routine PSA screening revealed elevated levels.

Doctors caught it in its early stages, which gave him options and hope.

He ultimately chose surgery to remove his prostate.

“Hearing that it was early on, that it was first stage for me … which is treatable, that was probably the saving grace,” he shared.

Although his diagnosis was later upgraded to Stage 2, the surgery was a success.

Montell even found himself back on stage with Usher just weeks later.

Unfortunately, his most recent scans showed small traces of cancer in his lymph nodes, which means another round of treatment is ahead.

The Road Ahead: Radiation And Hormone Therapy

Montell is preparing for proton radiation therapy, a targeted treatment he will undergo five days a week for seven weeks.

He will also begin hormone therapy to help stop the cancer from spreading.

“(It’s) a seven-and-a-half week interruption of life to make sure that I have a longer life,” he said with determination.

Through it all, he remains hopeful and grounded.

Montell credits his faith, his wife, and his family for giving him strength as he continues to fight.

Using His Story To Help Others

Montell is using his experience to help raise awareness, especially for Black men, who are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from it.

He has partnered with the nonprofit ZERO Prostate Cancer to advocate for regular screenings and early detection.

He is also documenting his journey in an upcoming film titled Sustain.

“I want to be a part of this solution,” he said. “Your life is worth more than what a stigma presents or what a taboo presents. I need you guys to get checked.”

Why Early Detection Matters

Prostate cancer often shows no symptoms until it is advanced, which is why regular screenings are so important.

Routine PSA tests and digital exams can be life-saving.

For Black men and men with a family history of prostate cancer, screenings should start as early as age 40.

Montell’s story is a powerful reminder of how early detection gave him a chance to fight back.

By sharing his journey, he hopes other men will feel encouraged to prioritize their health and break the stigma around prostate screenings.
