Netflix’s hit comedy series “The Upshaws” has officially wrapped, and during a recent stop at “The Breakfast Club,” Mike Epps opened up about what really brought the fan favorite to a close.

If you’ve been wondering why Bennie, Lucretia, and the whole chaotic crew suddenly disappeared from your watchlist, Mike kept it honest and direct, just the way we like it.

Creative Differences Behind The Scenes

According to Mike, the energy behind the camera didn’t match the magic happening on screen.

He revealed that creative differences between co-creator Wanda Sykes and showrunner Regina Hicks played a major role in the series ending when it did.

“The Upshaw’s ended because the writers, Wanda Sykes and the other lady, Regina Hicks, they just couldn’t see eye to eye,” he said during the interview.

He was sure to give both women their flowers, adding, “They did such a great job writing. We had the best writing team.”

Mike went on to explain that the tension wasn’t about anyone’s personal life, but more about the direction of the show.

He shared, “I think the lady Regina, she had an agenda that she wanted to push with the show, and everybody didn’t agree with it all the time.”

Other Factors That Played A Role

As with any long-running sitcom, there were natural hurdles too.

Mike pointed out that the growth of the cast’s younger characters created challenges for the storytelling.

“If you really want to think about it, the kids got grown. We really couldn’t go no further because of that. That’s what they do on these TV shows. When the kids get older, they cut the show off.”

Still, he emphasized that despite the bumps, the cast and crew found their rhythm again toward the end.

“In the middle of the seasons, we kinda lost it, but then in the end, when you see this season right here, you’ll see we end up getting it back.”

Mike Epps Stayed Focused On The Big Picture

One thing about Mike Epps, he is not here for unnecessary drama.

He admitted he rarely stepped into the writer’s room, choosing instead to keep his energy focused on the bigger goal.

“I’ve made it this far in my career being non confrontational. I let so much go because it’s not that serious and I’m always looking at the big picture.”

Even when the script changed overnight, he didn’t let the chaos rattle him too much. But he made it clear he knew when to draw the line, saying, “If I got a script and I’m sitting on the set and I’m reading it, I’ll tell them hell no, I ain’t doing that.”
