In a shocking incident out of Memphis, hairstylist Latasha Dickerson says she was brutally attacked in her own home after a client refused to pay for her braids.

The alleged attacker, Stephanie Samuels, 30, now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, according to police records.

“It’s scary. Be careful of who you let into your home,” Dickerson said.

A hairstylist with over 20 years of experience, she often provides on-location services or welcomes clients into her home in North Memphis.

For Dickerson, hair braiding is about more than money. “It’s not about the money or time. Just like making people feel good and beautiful,” she explained.

Samuels, a client of 17 years and a childhood friend, had booked an appointment last month for small, extra-long box braids.

The intricate process took nine-and-a-half hours to complete.

Dickerson charged $200 for the service, but the situation took a dark turn when Samuels handed her just $50 and claimed she couldn’t pay the rest because she needed to cover her mortgage.

“I was at a loss for words,” Dickerson admitted. Hoping to work out a payment plan, she tried to reason with her friend, but the situation quickly escalated into violence.

According to police, Samuels pepper-sprayed Dickerson, bit her right arm, and even brandished a box cutter—all while Dickerson’s children were in the home.

“When she sprayed me, I just started hollering,” Dickerson recalled.

“It burned so bad. I was just swinging my arms, and that’s when she started attacking me. She bit me—her whole teeth print is still in my arm.”

Samuels reportedly fled the scene with the $50 she initially handed over.

“When you try to help your community, people just try to take advantage of that,” Dickerson said. “She didn’t have to do that. She really didn’t.”

Dickerson had planned to use the money to buy Christmas gifts for her children.

Now, she’s warning other hairstylists to take precautions.

“Request a deposit and have clients pay upfront before starting services,” she advised.
