Melvin Gregg Is Back With Another Must-Watch Role

Most of us still can’t see Melvin Gregg without thinking of “Manboy” from “Snowfall.”

That role left such an impact it’s likely to follow him forever.

But instead of running from it, Melvin embraces it and keeps showing us new sides of his talent.

From “Nine Perfect Strangers” to laugh-out-loud comedy, he has proven he can do it all.

Now, Melvin Gregg is starring in Peacock’s “The Paper,” a hilarious workplace series already renewed for a second season.

I sat down with Melvin for a fun, honest, and sometimes laugh-out-loud conversation where he opened up about embracing “Manboy,” the quirks of his new character Detrick, and even his secret DIY skills.

Trust me, you’ll want to watch the full interview below.

A New Comedy From The World Of “The Office”

The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch in the Emmy-winning “The Office” is back with a new subject: a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher determined to revive it.

That’s where we meet the quirky staff of the Toledo Truth Teller, including Melvin’s character Detrick.

“I think saying it’s a spinoff of ‘The Office’ is more so promotional,” Gregg told me.

“IP is king in the industry at this point, and for people to be able to attach it to something that they love, they’ll be more inclined to watch.

But it’s a different show… They share the same DNA, but they’re a little different.”

Who Is Detrick?

Detrick may not be the star reporter of the Truth Teller, but his optimism makes him unforgettable.

“He’s very enthusiastic. He has kind of like a childlike optimism. He’s a people pleaser in a sense. He just wants to fit in and prove his worth,” Gregg explained.

He’s not really sure how to do that… and he’s not really getting the results that he wants, especially with this girl Nicole.

He’s doing all of the sweet things to show that he likes her, but she not responding.

And that kind of leaves him in a place of insecurity.

Why Season 2 Will Be Even Better

With “The Paper” already renewed, Melvin is excited to see Detrick evolve.

“I wanna see him learn more about himself,” he shared.

Episode 10 was necessary for him. He had to have that conversation.

He kind of stood up for himself, which I think is good.

Hopefully we see a little bit more of that, see him come into his own, own his space, and start to see his own worth, not so much looking for outside validation.

Melvin Gregg On Keeping It Real

If there’s one thing Melvin doesn’t hold back on, it’s honesty.

“My delivery isn’t always the best, but you can count on me telling you the truth,” he said.

If you don’t wanna hear the truth, don’t ask me.

I’m like brutally honest at times, but I’m always constructive with my criticism.

That realness shines through in our interview, where he also got into his surprising hobby: building furniture and backyard oases during the pandemic.
