A Cosmetic Trip Turns Tragic
What was meant to be a straightforward hair restoration trip turned into tragedy for 38-year-old Martyn Latchman of Milton Keynes, England.
Latchman, a former headteacher who recently transitioned into defense contracting, traveled to Istanbul in late July for his second hair transplant at the well-known Dr. Cinik clinic.
Reports from The Independent and The Guardian state that Latchman became suddenly unwell during the preparatory phase of the procedure — before surgery had even begun.
He was taken to the intensive care unit of a local hospital, but sadly passed away.
Second Procedure At A High-Profile Clinic
Latchman had previously undergone a successful first hair transplant at the same clinic and returned for a follow-up session.
Dr. Cinik clinic, located in Istanbul’s Besikitas district, is well-known in the cosmetic surgery world and has treated celebrity clients such as football stars Rio Ferdinand, Ivan Rakitić, and Rivaldo.
In a statement, the clinic said Latchman “unexpectedly became unwell for reasons that are still unknown” and confirmed that “all relevant medical documentation” has been submitted to authorities.
Out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details have been shared.
Investigation Underway
Turkish health authorities are investigating the circumstances of Latchman’s death, and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause.
The U.K. Foreign Office has confirmed it is supporting Latchman’s family and communicating with Turkish officials.
The clinic expressed that it was “deeply saddened” by his passing and noted that the incident is now part of an active legal process.
Family And Friends Remember Him
Tributes have been pouring in from loved ones.
His brother, Yashley Latchman, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook alongside a photo of the two at the gym:
“Rest in peace, my brother. You will forever be my source of inspiration and motivation. Thanks for everything. Will miss you loads.”
These words capture the deep loss felt by those closest to him.

The Growing Trend — And Risks — Of Medical Tourism
Turkey has become one of the world’s leading destinations for hair transplants, with more than one million people traveling there each year for cosmetic procedures, according to the Turkish Healthcare Travel Council.
The Dr. Cinik clinic alone claims to have performed over 50,000 successful transplants.
While many patients are pleased with their results, Latchman’s story serves as a sobering reminder that medical tourism carries real risks.
Thorough research, vetting medical facilities, and understanding potential complications are essential before undergoing procedures abroad.
My sincerest condolences to Martyn’s loved ones and friends.
