Mariah Carey is facing an unimaginable loss after both her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, passed away on the same day over the weekend.
In an exclusive statement, the 55-year-old Grammy winner shared, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”
She added, “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Details surrounding the causes of death for Patricia and Alison remain unknown.
Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was once married to Alfred Roy Carey.
The couple had three children—Alison, Mariah, and their brother, Morgan—before divorcing when Mariah was just three years old.
Mariah’s relationship with her mother was a blend of love and complexity, reflecting a lifetime of highs and lows.
In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer described their bond as “full of contradictions and competing realities.”
Despite the challenges, Mariah cherished their connection, and the two even performed a duet together in 2010 during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” special.
Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
The relationship between Mariah and Alison was equally complex.
Mariah wrote that for her own well-being, it was often “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison or Morgan.
She poignantly reflected on this in her memoir, saying, “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
