Karla Sofía Gascón, the Oscar-nominated Emilia Pérez actress, has deleted her X (formerly Twitter) account amid backlash over resurfaced racist and disparaging tweets.

Gascón recently issued a public apology after old social media posts resurfaced containing offensive remarks about Muslims, George Floyd, and even the Oscars themselves.

However, her apology failed to sway the public.

By Friday morning (January 31), Karla Sofía Gascón was trending on X, with over 270,000 tweets condemning her past statements.

In a statement, Gascón revealed that she chose to deactivate her account due to an overwhelming wave of harassment and death threats.

“I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect me and my family, so at their request, I am closing my account on X,” Gascón, 52, wrote. “I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused, and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything.”

She continued, “I have defended each and every one of the minorities in this world and supported any event against racism, freedom of religion, or homophobia, in the same way that I have criticized the hypocrisy that underlies them—because the first thing I am self-critical of is myself.”

“Perhaps my words were not correct, many times due to ignorance or pure mistake. I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or will in the future. I am a human being who has made, makes, and will make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect.”

One thing about tweets—they will always come back to haunt you.

That said, harassment and death threats are never acceptable.

Perhaps now is a good time for Karla to take a step back.
