In a recent twist to the Breonna Taylor case, a federal judge has dismissed key felony charges against two former Louisville officers accused of falsifying the warrant that led to the tragic police raid at her apartment.
The judge, U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson, ruled that the actions of Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, who fired at police during the raid, were the legal cause of her death—not the alleged false warrant.
This decision significantly reduces the charges against ex-Detective Joshua Jaynes and former Sgt. Kyle Meany from potential life sentences to misdemeanors.
However, some charges remain, including a conspiracy charge against Jaynes and another against Meany for allegedly making false statements during the investigation.
The controversy stems from the 2020 incident when police broke into Taylor’s apartment with a drug warrant.
Walker, thinking an intruder was breaking in, fired a shot that hit an officer, prompting the police to return fire, killing Taylor.
Judge Simpson concluded that Walker’s actions interrupted the sequence of events, making him the legal cause of Taylor’s death.
While the charges against Walker were eventually dropped, Taylor’s family remains devastated by the judge’s ruling.
They have vowed to continue their fight for justice, as the U.S. Justice Department reviews the decision and considers its next steps.
In a related development, former officer Kelly Goodlett, who had been implicated in the federal warrant case, pleaded guilty last year and is expected to testify against Jaynes and Meany in their upcoming trials.
Federal prosecutors have alleged that Jaynes falsely claimed that a suspected drug dealer was receiving packages at Taylor’s apartment, a claim that Goodlett knew to be untrue.
Social media is buzzing as the public reacts to the latest ruling in the case.
