James Earl Jones, the legendary actor whose deep, resonant voice brought Darth Vader to life in Star Wars, passed away this morning at his home in Dutchess County, NY.
He was 93. His representatives at Independent Artist Group confirmed the sad news.
Mr. Jones’ illustrious career spanned decades, and he was celebrated as one of the finest stage and screen actors of our time.
He achieved the rare status of an EGOT winner, with two Emmy Awards, three Tony Awards, a Grammy, and an Honorary Oscar to his name.
From his breakout role in Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove to his portrayal of Mufasa in The Lion King, Jones left an indelible mark on Hollywood.
In addition to voicing Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy and several follow-up films, he starred in iconic movies like Field of Dreams, Coming to America, The Hunt for Red October, and Conan the Barbarian.
A commanding presence on Broadway, Jones earned four Tony Award nominations, winning twice for his roles in The Great White Hope (1969) and Fences (1987).
He was also honored with a Special Tony Award in 2017, capping off his outstanding contributions to the theater.
