In a heart-wrenching case out of Florida, grieving parents Gianna Lopera and Jahmiah Peets have filed a lawsuit against Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, alleging that a NICU worker’s actions caused a devastating injury that ultimately led to the death of their premature baby, Jahxy Peets.

Their daughter was born in June 2022 at just 24 weeks, following an emergency C-section.

Jahxy was immediately intubated and transferred to the NICU, and according to court documents, there was initially “no evidence of any birth-related trauma.”

However, just two weeks later, an MRI reportedly revealed a traumatic spinal cord injury that had left Jahxy paralyzed and unable to breathe on her own.

The October 17 complaint claims that Jahxy’s neck was broken in the NICU, an injury the parents allege could only occur due to “excessive force.”

They argue that medical records lack documentation of such an incident and indicate no internal investigation took place.

According to the lawsuit, the NICU worker allegedly returned Jahxy to her incubator without notifying others of the injury, leaving the family in the dark about what truly happened.

The complaint further states that the hospital failed to inform authorities, suggesting an attempt to “cover up” the traumatic event that later claimed Jahxy’s life in November 2022.

A hospital spokesperson offered sympathies to the family, emphasizing that caring for extremely premature infants is a challenging and deeply emotional task for all involved.

“We look forward to discussing the facts of this case in the appropriate forum,” the statement concluded.

At an emotional October 21 press conference, Peets described Jahxy as a “fighter,” while Lopera expressed heartbreak and frustration, saying, “Every parent whose baby is born at Winnie Palmer deserves to know what happened to Jahxy.”

She added, “By covering it up, they are leaving room for it to happen again.”

Now, Jahxy’s parents are not only seeking answers—they’re demanding justice, compensation for damages, and a jury trial to hold those they believe responsible accountable.
