It’s official—Hulu has decided not to move forward with a second season of its original drama series “Black Cake”, starring Adrienne Warren and Mia Isaac.
This decision isn’t too shocking, as it’s been nearly 10 months since Season 1 wrapped, leaving many fans wondering about the show’s future.
The series, created by “Women of the Movement”‘s Marissa Jo Cerar and produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films alongside Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, had its fate sealed for months.
There was even talk that Netflix might step in to save the acclaimed drama, but those discussions didn’t gain much traction.
While Netflix had originally shown interest during the bidding war in 2021, program relocations between streamers are rare and tricky, especially in today’s streaming wars.
Based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel, “Black Cake” earned critical acclaim, scoring an impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season 1 received NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing in a Dramatic Series for Cerar, along with a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Just weeks ago, Cerar even won the Humanitas Prize for Drama Teleplay, adding to the show’s accolades.
“Black Cake” is a rich family drama wrapped in a murder mystery, set across Jamaica, Rome, Scotland, England, and Southern California.
The story follows a runaway bride, Covey, who vanishes into the Jamaican surf in the late 1960s, either drowned or on the run for her husband’s murder.
Decades later, in modern-day California, a widow named Eleanor Bennett dies from cancer, leaving her two estranged children a flash drive.
On it are untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America, which shake up everything her children thought they knew about their family’s history.
Alongside Warren and Isaac, the series also featured Chipo Chung, Ashley Thomas, Glynn Turman, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi, and Ahmed Elhaj.
Cerar, Winfrey, and Kaplan served as executive producers, with Carla Gardini and Emily Rudolf also contributing behind the scenes.
Honestly, I always thought “Black Cake” was meant to be a limited series.
