Jury Reaches A Verdict
After nearly three years of speculation and courtroom drama, a Memphis jury has found Hernandez Govan not guilty of organizing the 2021 ambush killing of rapper Young Dolph.
The 45-year-old was acquitted Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Jurors deliberated for about three hours before clearing him of all charges.
As the verdict was read, Govan embraced his attorney and thanked Shelby County Judge Jennifer Mitchell, who told him he was free to go.
The Case Against Hernandez Govan
While Govan was never accused of firing the fatal shots, prosecutors alleged that he directed the two men who did. Their case hinged on testimony from Cornelius Smith Jr., one of the admitted shooters, who claimed Govan hired him to carry out the hit and promised a $10,000 cut.
Prosecutors also introduced cellphone records showing communication between Govan, Smith, Justin Johnson (the other convicted shooter), and Anthony “Big Jook” Mims leading up to the killing.
Despite the evidence, Govan’s defense attorney, Manny Arora, argued that there was no direct link tying his client to the murder. Arora questioned the reliability of Smith’s testimony, pointing to inconsistencies and previous claims that others may have ordered the hit.
Remembering Young Dolph
Born Adolph Thornton Jr., Young Dolph was more than a rapper. He was an independent label owner, producer, and philanthropist deeply admired in Memphis.
On November 17, 2021, the 36-year-old artist was in his hometown for his annual Thanksgiving turkey giveaway. While stopping at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies, two men pulled up in a white Mercedes-Benz and opened fire. Dolph was shot about 20 times and died at the scene, leaving fans, family, and the music industry devastated.
As this verdict makes headlines, my heart goes out to Young Dolph’s family, loved ones, and loyal fans who continue to grieve such a heartbreaking loss. His children, partner, and community still carry the weight of this tragedy, and they deserve compassion and support as they navigate the pain of losing someone so beloved.
Rivalries, Revenge, And Testimony
The state painted the killing as part of a larger feud. Prosecutors suggested that Big Jook, Yo Gotti’s brother, placed a $100,000 bounty on Young Dolph after being targeted in diss tracks.
Smith testified that Govan gave him guns, informed him of Dolph’s whereabouts, and presented the killing as their “opportunity.” However, the defense countered that Smith’s story shifted over time and was motivated by hopes of a lighter sentence.
Interestingly, Smith also testified that he once believed Govan might have been working with the FBI—a claim Govan’s lawyer used to question Smith’s credibility.
Where The Case Stands Now
While Govan walks free, the legal process isn’t over. Cornelius Smith Jr. still faces his own trial for murder and conspiracy, while Justin Johnson was sentenced to life in prison last year.
The killing of Young Dolph has left behind a tangled web of accusations, rivalries, and unanswered questions. And while this verdict closes one chapter, the search for complete justice in this case is far from finished.
Young Dolph’s Legacy Lives On
Though the courtroom battles continue, Young Dolph’s legacy will never be defined by his death. He was a self-made artist who proudly owned his masters, built his label Paper Route Empire, and inspired countless independent artists to bet on themselves.
Beyond the music, Dolph was a devoted father, a community leader, and a man who never forgot where he came from. From donating to schools to handing out turkeys in his hometown, his impact on Memphis remains undeniable.
As fans and loved ones honor his life, Young Dolph’s music, spirit, and generosity will continue to resonate for generations to come.
