It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen, a celebrated poet, cultural activist, and Pulitzer Prize–nominated author, who transitioned at the remarkable age of 102.
Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen was a fierce advocate for education and the arts.
She founded the Adept New American Folk Center, a cultural hub that nurtured creativity and fostered community engagement.
Through her writing, activism, and unwavering commitment to preserving Black culture, she became a guiding light for generations of thinkers, creators, and dreamers.
A Legacy Of Artistry And Advocacy
Beyond her literary contributions, Dr. Vivian Ayers Allen instilled her passion for the arts into her family.
She was the proud mother of award-winning entertainers Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad, whose artistry reflects the values and vision their mother lived by.
Her legacy is not only etched in books and history but also continues to shine through the groundbreaking achievements of her children.
