Dr. Mildred Muhammad Reclaims Her Voice

In the forthcoming documentary “Hunted By My Husband: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper,” Dr. Mildred Muhammad courageously reclaims her narrative after years of silence.

For decades, the world knew John Muhammad as the infamous DC Sniper, but what many didn’t realize was that the violence that gripped the D.C. area in 2002 began as an extension of domestic abuse and control.

When I sat down with Dr. Muhammad, she opened up about what it meant to finally tell her truth through Investigation Discovery’s No Excuse for Abuse campaign.

“My story concentrates on the one to eight seconds—the ones we don’t talk about,” she said.

“Before you get to the nine to fifteen seconds when a woman is physically abused, you have to go through the one to eight, which is coercive control.”

Her testimony in the documentary and during our conversation shines a light on how psychological, financial, and emotional abuse can quietly set the stage for devastating violence.

Recognizing The Hidden Signs Of Abuse

Dr. Muhammad shared that she didn’t even realize she was in an abusive relationship until she filled out a restraining order.

“The words ‘domestic violence’ had never entered my psyche,” she recalled. “It wasn’t until the police handed me that paperwork that I realized what I was experiencing.”

She described the subtle ways abusers chip away at a person’s confidence, questioning how they dress, isolating them from friends and family, and using manipulation to gain control.

“Abuse grows in silence,” she told me. “It doesn’t grow in public. That’s why I spell Hyde as H-I-D-E. They’re hiding in plain sight.”

Throughout our discussion, Dr. Muhammad emphasized that abuse isn’t limited to physical scars.

“Eighty percent of victims do not have physical scars,” she said. “You could be sitting next to someone at work who is being victimized.”

Finding Faith And Fighting For Freedom

One of the most emotional moments in our conversation came when Dr. Muhammad described the moment she chose faith over fear.

After her ex-husband kidnapped their three children and fled the country, she said she collapsed from the stress and had to be hospitalized.

“He called the hospital and said he was coming to kill me,” she recalled. “They had to move me to a shelter across the street.”

In that shelter, she turned to prayer and found the strength to fight.

“I told God, ‘I’m giving You my children so I can work on me and be ready when I get them back.’ I had to release them to save myself.”

She went on to take paralegal courses, represent herself in court, and file the paperwork that would eventually help bring her children home.

“I locked in,” she said. “I had to prepare myself to be ready when the time came.”

A Campaign With Purpose: No Excuse For Abuse

“Hunted By My Husband: The Untold Story of the DC Sniper” serves as the cornerstone of Investigation Discovery’s No Excuse for Abuse campaign, an annual initiative that supports Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The campaign is designed to educate, empower, and inspire action through powerful storytelling and survivor advocacy.

Through partnerships with The Hotline and NO MORE, ID is helping viewers recognize the signs of abuse, understand coercive control, and access resources for help.

Dr. Muhammad’s story personifies that mission, showing that even in the face of unimaginable trauma, resilience and faith can lead to healing.

How To Help Someone In An Abusive Relationship

Dr. Muhammad also offered guidance for anyone trying to support someone in an abusive relationship. “Before you try to help, check your boundaries,” she advised.

“Ask yourself what you can and can’t do. And when you finally sit down with that person, don’t tell them what to do. Just ask, ‘How can I help you?’”

That simple, compassionate question, she said, can make all the difference. “It might be the first time someone has ever asked them that.”
