A Louisiana police officer has been charged for falsely claiming he was ambushed after he accidentally shot himself with his service weapon.
John Goulart Jr. was arrested on Tuesday and charged with one count of criminal mischief and one count of malfeasance in office.
The incident occurred on Sunday night when the 25-year-old officer reported he had been shot around 11:50 p.m. and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Deputy Chief Darrell Basco of the Pineville Police Department Administrative Bureau told CNN, “The investigation led to a determination that the officer shot himself, concealed and altered the facts. Everything shows it was an accidental discharge.”
John Goulart Jr. was booked at the Rapides Parish Detention Center and was later released on $10,500 bond.
He remains on administrative leave.
