Claressa Shields is speaking out after losing Sportswoman of the Year to Angel Reese at the BET Awards. See what she had to say and how folks are reacting.
🏆 Claressa Shields Speaks Out After BET Awards Loss
Claressa Shields had some thoughts after leaving the 2025 BET Awards empty-handed—and she didn’t hesitate to share them.
The boxing champ took to social media after losing the Sportswoman of the Year award to WNBA rising star Angel Reese.
In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Claressa wrote:
“Still don’t know how I didn’t win the Sportswoman of the Year for the @BETAwards but Congrats to Angel Reese and all the other Nominees 🤷🏾♀️ I just thought accolades mattered.”
🥊 Focused On The Next Fight
Instead of staying in her feelings, Claressa quickly shifted her focus back to her upcoming title defense.
She’s scheduled to fight on July 26 and made it clear that she’s back on her grind:
“But let me gone head and make up for missing 2 days of grinding at the gym to attend all this BET stuff…. I defend My undisputed Heavyweight Title July 26th. If (when) I win that fight I’ll be 19x World champ.”
Whether you agree with her stance or not, there’s no denying her resume is stacked.
🗣️ Social Media Chatter Heats Up
After Claressa’s tweets started making the rounds, some folks accused her of being salty about the loss.
Others felt she had a valid point and just expressed honest disappointment.
That’s when Claressa followed up with a clarification.
She made it known that she supports Angel Reese and meant no disrespect.
“Ain’t nobody saying Angel Reese don’t have accolades or she not good…. I’m saying I thought the person with ‘THE MOST’ accolades & accomplishments would win the Award. I’m team Angel Reese!”
She added:
“I’m not joining in on any hate train when it comes to Angel Reese. I have mad respect for her and all the other female athletes that excel in their sport.
As for my earlier comments, I am allowed to express my feelings. I was shocked I didn’t win. I was under the impression the category was graded on accolades of your sport. It’s OK to be a competitor.”
💬 Social Media Reacts
Here’s a quick peek at how folks on social media are reacting:

I hate to see such an accomplished woman athlete in a class of her own Claressa Shields down a young athlete. Angel Reese is one of the most popular & fastest growing brands. She was thrust into the international spotlight by us all in college. Awards aren’t just about accolades

Sportswoman is someone not just competing but also making impact in the world of professional sports. Angel is doing so like mentioned with not just one but two sports leagues.

Claressa has lost the award multiple times and never did this hater type 💩 until she got with a… https://t.co/ApJEC6lFSi
with this attitude, they won’t nominate you at ALL anymore. and keep that fake ass “congrats.” if you were really happy for angel, you wouldn’t have tweeted this. humble yourself, claressa. https://t.co/wSm0MxDT0P

Claressa Shields went about it wrongly, but Angel Reese winning BET Sportswoman of the Year 3 years in a row makes ZERO sense. She’s nowhere near the best Women’s basketball player, & we got Black Women dominating other sports like boxing, gymnastics, tennis, & track. #SwitchItUp

Was Claressa Shields out of pocket for posting her thoughts, or was she just being honest about how she felt?
