A Tragic Loss For R&B

Frens, this one still hurts to write. Beloved R&B singer and neo-soul trailblazer Angie Stone tragically lost her life earlier this year after a devastating crash on an Alabama interstate.

Now, her children are taking legal action to hold those they believe are responsible accountable.

The Lawsuit And Allegations

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Lawrenceville, Georgia, comes from Stone’s two children, Diamond Stone and Michael D’Angelo Archer, alongside Sheila Hopkins, who survived the crash.

They’re suing multiple parties including the van driver, the trucking company, and Daimler Truck North America.

According to the lawsuit, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van lost control, and when he attempted to regain control, the vehicle flipped.

Passersby stopped to help, pulling several passengers from the wreckage.

Tragically, Stone was still trapped inside when an 18-wheeler loaded with sugar slammed into the van.

The impact reportedly ejected Stone and pinned her beneath the vehicle.

The suit alleges the truck driver was distracted, listening to music on headphones, and failed to brake before colliding at nearly 70 mph.

It also claims the truck’s collision avoidance system failed to detect the van.

Neither CSRT of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, nor Daimler Truck North America has publicly commented on the lawsuit at this time.

Angie Stone’s Legacy In Music

Beyond the headlines, Angie Stone’s impact on music is undeniable.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, she first made her mark with the pioneering hip-hop trio The Sequence on Sugar Hill Records.

Their single “Funk You Up” was one of the first rap songs recorded by an all-female group and went on to inspire countless artists, including Dr. Dre.

Stone later became part of the group Vertical Hold before embarking on a solo career that gave us unforgettable neo-soul classics. Her hits include:

  • “Wish I Didn’t Miss You”
  • “No More Rain (In This Cloud)”
  • “Brotha”
  • “Baby” featuring Betty Wright

Her 2001 album Mahogany Soul reached No. 22 on the Billboard 200, and her 2007 release The Art of Love & Warpeaked at No. 11.

With a career spanning decades, she blended gospel roots, hip-hop history, and soulful storytelling into music that defined an era.

Angie’s Final Words To Fans

Before the crash, Angie had taken to Instagram to share her excitement about future projects.

“A lot of stuff is going on that I don’t want to just let out of the bag just yet,” she said with a smile.

Her joy and anticipation reminded us why she remained such a vibrant voice in R&B until her final days.

Remembering Angie Stone

Angie Stone’s artistry continues to resonate across generations.

From breaking barriers with The Sequence to dominating the neo-soul wave of the 2000s, she leaves behind a legacy that is both historic and deeply personal for fans.

As her children pursue justice through the courts, the music world continues to honor and celebrate the life of a woman whose voice will never be forgotten.
