Janelle Monáe took the stage at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony with a high-energy performance of André 3000’s smash hit “Hey Ya” from his legendary solo album The Love Below.
She later shared on social media that André gave her full permission to “have fun and express what you want.”
When 3stacks asked me to perform HEY YA I said HELLL YEA!!!
I was happy asl and also nervous cause it’s so iconic you don’t wanna touch it ya know.
You gotta make it your own. I said ‘Dré is there anything specific you want me to do?’ He said ‘I just want you to have fun and express what you want!!’.
Say less. Here’s 2 minutes of just that. So much funnnn! What an honor it was to be a part of this tribute and honor a duo and song that changed my life and unlocked a new level of freedom for me (and so many!) as an artist.
Congratulations BIG & DRÉ! it was an honor to be here to witness your much deserved induction into the ROCK N’ ROLL HALL OF FAME🥹
Watch Janelle Monáe’s post and her performance clip below.
In full transparency (and with the utmost respect) I thought Janelle’s performance was a hot mess.
Only second to Doja Cat, who didn’t even know all of the words to “Ms. Jackson.” (Sigh.)
Frens, drop down in the comments and let me know if you enjoyed Janelle Monáe’s rendition of “Hey Ya.”
