Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis has died at age 52. A beloved host, cultural icon, and advocate, she leaves behind a powerful legacy in media and health awareness.
💔 Remembering Ananda Lewis
Ananda Lewis, the groundbreaking former MTV VJ and talk show host who helped shape a generation of music lovers and inspired countless women with her authenticity and advocacy, has passed away at the age of 52.
Her sister, Lakshmi, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 11, writing: “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms. Lord, rest her soul 🙏🏽.”
📺 The Rise Of A Generation’s “It Girl”
Ananda Lewis burst onto the scene in the late ’90s as one of MTV’s most dynamic VJs.
From “Total Request Live” to “Hot Zone,” she quickly became a household name—interviewing stars like Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, and NSYNC, while also addressing deeper social issues like school violence and the tragic passing of her friend, Aaliyah.
In 1999, The New York Times crowned her “the hip-hop generation’s reigning It Girl,” and it was easy to see why.
Her on-camera charisma, sharp intellect, and compassion set her apart from the pack.
By 2000, she was named one of PEOPLE’s “50 Most Beautiful People,” and even Prince himself once said, “Ananda is Cleopatra. You know she’s a queen.”
🎤 From VJ To Talk Show Host
In 2001, Ananda made a bold move—leaving MTV to launch “The Ananda Lewis Show.”
The show only lasted one season, but it proved her commitment to having deeper, more impactful conversations.
Reflecting years later in an interview with Shondaland, she said, “I wish I had stopped the people that wanted me to do the [talk] show and said, ‘Not yet, it’s a little too early to do this.’”
🛠 Life Beyond The Spotlight
Ananda eventually stepped away from the mainstream spotlight.
But she never stopped working.
From hosting “The Insider” and A&E’s “America’s Top Dog” to becoming a skilled carpenter and contractor, Ananda was always reinventing herself.
She also used her platform to uplift others—speaking out on everything from education to personal wellness.
🩺 Ananda Lewis’ Fierce Advocacy For Health Awareness
In 2020, Ananda revealed she had been diagnosed with stage III breast cancer.
In a brave and emotional post, she admitted she had avoided regular mammograms due to concerns about radiation.
Later, in a 2024 CNN roundtable with longtime friend Stephanie Elam and anchor Sara Sidner, she revealed that her cancer had progressed to stage IV.
Ananda chose a holistic route early on—something she later wished she’d reconsidered.
I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way…
I wish I could go back. It’s important for me to admit where I went wrong with this.
In a January 2025 Essence essay, Ananda stressed the importance of prevention and listening to our bodies.
We’re not meant to stay here forever…
I want to be able to look back on my life and say, ‘I did that exactly how I wanted to.’
