Angela Yee casually noted how Amerie had “been locked in for a long time,” referring to her relationship status—but Amerie quickly corrected her: “I was, but not now,” she said, subtly dropping the bombshell.
The group was visibly surprised, and in the chatter that followed, Amerie confirmed, “Divorced.”
📺 She First Shared The News With Joe Budden
Though many fans were shocked by her admission, Amerie clarified she had already mentioned the split during a recent appearance on “The Joe Budden Podcast.“
“I only mentioned it with Joe. I told him about it. We talked about it. It came up inadvertently.”
She went on to say she and Nicholson had been separated for some time before deciding to divorce.
🕊️ A Love That Began In Business
Amerie and Lenny Nicholson’s story started in the music industry.
The couple met through work—Nicholson was once her manager—and began dating in 2007.
They tied the knot in 2011 and welcomed their son, River Rowe Charles, in 2018.
Now, more than a decade later, the two are quietly closing the chapter on their marriage.
✨ Amerie’s New Chapter And A New Mindset
While the divorce news may be fresh for many fans, Amerie is already reflecting on her journey and personal growth.
In a snippet from the interview shared to Angela Yee’s YouTube channel, the “Talkin’ to Me” singer shared, “It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been separated.”
She added some powerful insight about relationships and the importance of alignment:
All the relationships that we have I believe we have them because we’re supposed to learn something, and so everything is a blessing.
You can be with someone where you stay the same.
You can be with someone that can dim your light… or you can be with someone who amplifies you and who you amplify.

Amerie has always kept her personal life pretty private, but her decision to open up offers a refreshing reminder that healing and self-discovery often come with time.
As she steps into this next chapter, we wish her peace, love, and even more beautiful lessons along the way.
