Allen Iverson Opens Up About His Sobriety Journey
Hall of Famer Allen Iverson is in a new season of life focused on clarity, peace, and purpose.
The NBA icon recently revealed that he has been sober for six months, calling it “one of the best decisions” he has ever made.
In a heartfelt conversation with CBS News’ Maurice DuBois for CBS Mornings, Iverson shared how giving up alcohol has changed his life.
“One of my best decisions that I ever made in my life was to stop drinking,” Iverson said.
When asked how he feels now, the 11-time All-Star replied, “Better than I did when I was doing it.”
He explained that sobriety has helped him strengthen his relationships and see life more clearly.
“When you get drunk, you’re not how you usually are,” he said.
“The more I see it on other people, the more it makes me happy about my decision. And seeing how people around me appreciate it, I love it.”
Why Allen Iverson Wrote ‘Misunderstood’
Along with celebrating his sobriety milestone, Iverson is preparing to release his new memoir, “Misunderstood.”
The title speaks directly to how he has felt throughout his life and career, often misjudged, mislabeled, and underestimated.
“With this book, you’re hearing it from the horse’s mouth,” Iverson said.
“Misunderstood comes from, you think you know but you have no idea.”
He added, “There’s a lot of things that people have said about me throughout my career. A lot of those things hurt. Calling me a thug when I know I’m not. Judging me off of a look. That was one of the toughest things I really had to deal with.”

Prime Video To Premiere ‘Allen Iv3rson’
Basketball fans and culture lovers have another reason to celebrate.
Prime Video is set to premiere “Allen Iv3rson,” a three-part docuseries exploring the inspiring and unapologetic journey of the former NBA superstar, on October 23.
This first-look project comes from Shaquille O’Neal’s Jersey Legends, a division of Authentic Studios, and Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton’s Unanimous Media.
Directed by One9, the docuseries promises more than just highlights and headlines.
It offers a raw, reflective look at a man who redefined basketball, challenged stereotypes, and reshaped culture both on and off the court.

The Legacy Of Allen Iverson’s Influence
Allen Iverson has always been a trailblazer in every sense of the word.
His fearless play style, cultural impact, and unapologetic authenticity changed the game forever.
During his career, his fashion choices like baggy jeans, jerseys, chains, and hats sparked controversy and eventually led to the NBA’s “business casual” dress code in 2005.
While the league initially resisted his influence, Allen is now celebrated for paving the way for players to embrace individuality and self-expression.
“It was something that the NBA had never seen,” he said.
“Now, all of these guys in the NBA have their own unique personalities. Dressing means a lot to them. Now I get the flowers for it from them.”
Still A Cultural Icon
Though he has been retired for 12 years, Allen Iverson’s impact continues to ripple through sports, fashion, and culture.
Between his upcoming Prime Video docuseries and the release of “Misunderstood,” Allen Iverson is giving fans an unfiltered look at his life, his lessons, and his legacy.
He’s not just telling his story. He’s owning it.
