Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Arrested In South Africa For Fake Passport
Rapper Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, was arrested on Thursday at South Africa’s Cape Town International Airport and charged with usage of fraudulent travel documents.
Home affairs spokesperson, Mayihlome Tshwete, confirmed via Twitter that the artist, born Dante Terrell Smith, was arrested.
Tshwete went on to explain, Yasiin, who arrived in South Africa using a U.S. passport, had been living in South Africa with relatives and overstayed his visitors permit.
He then tried to leave using a World Passport and South Africa doesn’t recognize World Passports, so he was arrested.
Yasiin Bey has been given 14 days to get out of South Africa and he’s reportedly been banned from traveling there for five years.
He is expected to appear in Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
