Mo’Nique has become a hot topic after her exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter where she opened up about being blackballed in Hollywood.
Mo’Nique Says She Was Blackballed After Her Oscar Win & Lee Daniels Explains Why
According to the Oscar-winning actress, it was her friend and “Empire” creator, Lee Daniels, who broke the news to her.
I got a phone call from Lee Daniels maybe six or seven months ago. And he said to me, ‘Mo’Nique, you’ve been blackballed.’ And I said, “I’ve been blackballed? Why have I been blackballed?’ And he said, ‘Because you didn’t play the game.’ And I said, ‘Well, what game is that?’ And he gave me no response. The next thing he said to me was, ‘Your husband is outbidding you.’
Following the explosive interview, there has been a lot of convo about and from all parties involved.
During an appearance on CNN Daniels said, “I think that there were demands made from her on the Precious campaign everyone knows about that hurt her and I told her that.”
Lee Daniels went on to talk about how Mo’Nique has to “play the game” in order to rectify her tarnished relationships in Hollywood saying, “If she plays ball. You gotta play ball. This is not just show…it’s show business and you’ve gotta play ball.”
Mo’Nique recently appeared on CNN and during her convo with Don Lemon she clarified she hadn’t been blackballed as Lee Daniels would have her believe. She said she simply didn’t take the roles that were offered to her.
The phone was ringing and the scripts were coming. And when people say, ‘Mo’Nique, where have you been’….it’s not that haven’t been on TV or been in the movies because I’ve been blackballed as Mr. Lee Daniels has said. The offers just didn’t make sense, Don.
So, again…the phones didn’t stop ringing and the scripts didn’t stop coming. But, the offers associated with them were offers that made me say, ‘Guys, I can’t accept that.’ Because if I accept that and I won the award…what are my sistas being offered who didn’t win the award or wasn’t nominated and what does it say to the little girl who isn’t here yet. That if we continue to accept these low offers how ever do we make a difference and make a change?
