Charlie Sheen revealed he is HIV positive during an exclusive interview with Matt Lauer on the “TODAY” show.

“I’m here to admit that I’m HIV positive. I have to stop this onslaught of attacks and sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories about the threatening the health of so many others which couldn’t be further from the truth.”

The 50-year-old actor says he was diagnosed roughly four years ago after he sought medical attention for severe headaches and night sweats. “It started with what I thought was a series of crushing headaches,” he said. “I thought I had a brain tumor. I thought it was over.”

Charlie also revealed he has shelled out upwards of $10 million in shakedowns to those who threatened to reveal his diagnoses to the world.

“What people forget is that it’s money taken from my children,” he said. “I trusted them and they were deep in my inner circle, and I thought they could be helpful. My trust turned to their treason.”

Charlie admitted he’s bracing himself for lawsuits from his former sexual partners, but he insists he divulged his status to all of his partners following his diagnosis.

Sheen said now that he’s come forward with his HIV status, he will no longer have to pay to keep his illness a secret. “I think I release myself from this prison today.”
