Former UCLA and Sacramento Kings basketball player Tyler Honeycutt was found dead of an apparent suicide after exchanging gunfire with the Los Angeles Police Department.
He was only 27.

Honeycutt, 27, allegedly barricaded himself in a Sherman Oaks residence on Friday. Police came to the scene after his mother called to say Honeycutt was acting erratically.
When police arrived, Honeycutt allegedly shot at the officers, who shot back. It was unclear whether Honeycutt shot himself or was shot by police.
No officers were injured in the altercation, according to LAPD. Several residents in the area had been evacuated as a precaution.
The LAPD twitter account detailed the incident as it unfolded and initially stated Tyler was struck by police gunfire. They later stated his gunshot was self-inflicted.
There’s been an Officer-Involved Shooting in the area of Riverside Drive & Tyrone Avenue in LAPD Van Nuys Division. It’s an active incident involving a barricaded suspect. A Public Information Officer is responding and we will provide details as available. Please avoid the area

No officers were injured & all indications are that the suspect is still alive. He’s believe to be armed & barricaded inside of a residence. SWAT and our Crisis Negotiation Team is on scene. Evacuations have taken place & we expect street closures for several hours

UPDATE: We can confirm that during the initial encounter the suspect fired a shot out of the residence and officers returned fire. No officers were injured and it’s unknown if the suspect was struck. This is still an ongoing barricaded situation with SWAT officers on scene.

UPDATE: Regarding last nights Officer-Involved Shooting in Van Nuys Division, it appears as if the suspect was not struck by any officer’s gunfire. The suspect appears to have sustained injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
