Trayvon Martin To Receive Posthumous Honorary Degree
Florida Memorial University plans to award Trayvon Martin with a posthumous honorary bachelor of science degree in aviation “in honor of the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot.”
Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will accept the degree on his behalf at the school’s May 13 graduation ceremony.
Via the Miami Herald:
Trayvon’s mother, Sabrina Fulton, was an FMU graduate. She and Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, started The Trayvon Martin Foundation after their son’s death and have become vocal social justice activists. They recently published “Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin.”
Trayvon, 17, was walking back to his father’s house from a convenience store with an Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice and a bag of Skittles when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood crime watch captain patrolling a gated community in Sanford.
Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder, but the trial garnered national attention and spotlighted race relations in the United States.
