Francisco Oropeza captured arrested in Texas mass shooting

The four-day manhunt for Francisco Oropeza, the gunman in a Texas mass shooting on Friday, has come to an end.

Oropeza, 39, was shooting rounds from his AR-15 rifle in his backyard late Friday night just before midnight when his neighbors asked him to shoot farther away because a baby was trying to sleep.

Wilson Garcia called the police after Francisco Oropeza refused to comply.

According to Garcia, 10 to 20 minutes later Oropeza stormed into their home and started shooting.

Garcia’s wife, Sonia Argentina Guzman, 25, who was standing at the front door, and his 9-year-old son, Daniel Enrique Laso, who was in the front room were killed.

Diana Velazquez Alvarado, 21, and Julisa Molina Rivera, 31, were killed trying to shield Garcia’s baby and 2-year-old daughter.

Jose Jonathan Casarez, 18, was also killed.

Garcia said more than a dozen people were in the home at the time of the shooting.

San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said, “Everybody that was shot was shot from the neck up, almost execution style.”

Francisco Oropeza fled the scene, but authorities used doorbell camera footage and an identity card to identify him.

Oropeza was captured and arrested in Montgomery County, Texas on Tuesday without incident.

The FBI received a tip about his location around 5:15 p.m. and he was arrested about an hour later.

“He was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry. They effectively made the arrest. He is uninjured,” Capers said.

My sincerest condolences to all of the families impacted by this senseless act of violence.
